A new woman moves into the refuge; she’s rude and starts to spread rumours about me to the other women. I try and ignore her, but when she calls me an abusive name, I can’t let it go. I demand she takes it back; I push her and tell her not to mess with me again.

Before long, the woman makes a complaint to the Refuge Coordinator and accuses me of pushing and threatening her; I try to explain what happened, but no one believes me. They tell me that I have one hour to pack my belongings and leave the refuge because my behaviour is unacceptable.

I’m angry and feel abandoned by the people meant to help me. With nowhere else to go, I return home to Kai.
